A note on lion's mane
The seller's sales page lists organic lion's mane powder among the ingredients. The label image published on the same site does not include it and shows Ceylon cinnamon and Irish sea moss instead. Formulas do get revised, so the simplest rule is to trust the label on the bottle you receive.
The gut lining ingredients
Hydrolyzed marine collagen peptides, 300 mg
Collagen is the main structural protein in connective tissue. Hydrolyzed means it has been broken into short chains that are easy to absorb. It is rich in glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. Research on collagen is strongest for skin and joints, usually at 2.5 to 10 grams a day. Evidence for digestive benefits is limited and comes from small studies at much higher doses than a capsule can hold, so here it is best viewed as a small protein contribution.
Colostrum powder (25% IgG), 15 mg
Colostrum is the first milk a cow produces after calving. It contains immunoglobulins, lactoferrin and growth factors. In studies with athletes and patients, colostrum has been linked to better scores on tests of intestinal permeability, but those studies used roughly 10 to 60 grams a day. The 15 mg here is a very small amount by comparison. It is also the source of the milk allergen on the label.
The botanicals
Black cumin seed extract (5% thymoquinone), 25 mg
Nigella sativa seeds have been used as a spice and household remedy for centuries. Modern studies, mostly using 1 to 2 grams of seed powder or oil a day, have looked at blood sugar, cholesterol and upper-stomach discomfort. The extract in Gut Save is standardized, which helps consistency, although the amount is small.
Papaya seed powder, 45 mg
Papaya seeds contain fiber and plant compounds and are eaten in small amounts in some tropical cuisines. The digestive enzyme papain comes mainly from the fruit's latex, not the seeds, so the seeds should not be credited with enzyme activity. Human research on papaya seed for bloating or regularity is very limited.
Organic Ceylon cinnamon powder, 45 mg
Ceylon cinnamon is the milder, lower-coumarin type of cinnamon. It has a long culinary tradition as an after-meal spice. At this amount it is closer to a pinch in food than to the doses used in blood sugar studies.
Organic Irish sea moss powder, 45 mg
Irish sea moss (Chondrus crispus) is a red seaweed containing soluble fibers such as carrageenan, along with iodine and other minerals. Animal research suggests a prebiotic effect. Because seaweed contains iodine, people with thyroid conditions should mention it to their doctor, even though the amount here is small.
The probiotics
Gut Save has two probiotic lines that together weigh 25 mg and provide 1.25 billion CFU at manufacture. The strains listed are Lactobacillus paracasei, L. buchneri, L. brevis, L. hilgardii, L. reuteri and Bifidobacterium lactis BL-04.
BL-04 is the best documented of these. It is a commercial strain with human trials, mostly on immune and respiratory outcomes and on digestive comfort during antibiotic use. L. reuteri and L. paracasei are widely used species, although benefits depend on the exact strain. L. buchneri, L. brevis and L. hilgardii are better known from fermented foods than from clinical studies.
What the label does not tell you
The CFU count is guaranteed at manufacture and not at the end of shelf life, and only one strain carries a strain code. The label does not ask for refrigeration, so store the bottle in a cool, dry place as directed.
